Hitachi Energy and Samsung Engineering & Construction Group (CT) have signed a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on high-voltage alternating current (HVAC) grid infrastructure, with the aim of supporting power grids in meeting growing demand from the data center market.

As part of the MoU, the companies will combine their capabilities to identify, assess, and pursue AC opportunities. According to the companies, this will see Hitachi offer its expertise in grid technologies, advanced engineering and design, electrical systems, and integrated digital solutions, while Samsung will contribute its engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) delivery capability.

The MoU aims to set out a strategic framework for the two firms to align on alternating current grid infrastructure development, which will see the companies develop a shared go-to‑market roadmap and an opportunity pipeline.

We will continue to lead complex cross-border transmission projects with integrated solutions that span both direct and alternating current technologies,” added Lee Byung-soo, EVP of Samsung C&T.

Hitachi has partnered with a range of companies over recent years to support power systems for the data center market. Recent deals include a partnership with OpenAI to supply power transmission and distribution equipment to the ChatGPT maker's data centers. As well as a partnership with regional transmission operator (RTO) Southwest Power Pool to develop an Nvidia-powered artificial intelligence solution that reduces the duration of interconnection impact studies.

Samsung CT is the construction and engineering arm of the larger Samsung group. The firm was founded in 1938 as Samsung’s first company. Over recent years, it has actively expanded its data center footprint, signing partnerships with Ansan Global to construct a 40MW data center in Gyeonggi Province, South Korea, and a deal with Korea Southeast Power to develop an integrated data center in South Korea, powered by a 900MW hydrogen plant.
