OpenAI has partnered with Japanese manufacturing conglomerate Hitachi, which will supply power transmission and distribution equipment to the ChatGPT maker's data centers.

First reported by NikkeiAsia, the two companies signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Thursday (2 October) to support the construction of AI infrastructure and data centers globally, while ensuring lower energy consumption costs.

In addition, OpenAI has committed to providing its large language model to Hitachi, which in turn intends to integrate the technology into its Lumada digital platform and explore utilization strategies.

According to reports, Hitachi will contribute to the Stargate project through the collaboration, with OpenAI set to incorporate Hitachi's energy-saving technologies and explore sourcing IT equipment, including storage systems, from the company.

Stargate was launched by OpenAI in January, in partnership with SoftBank, Oracle, and Abu Dhabi's MGX. At the time, OpenAI claimed it would invest $500 billion in digital infrastructure over the next four years to serve its compute needs.

Last week, OpenAI announced five more US Stargate data centers, including in Shackelford County, Texas; Doña Ana County, New Mexico; and an unnamed site in the Midwest.

Earlier this week, Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix signed an MoU with OpenAI to develop an AI data center in the southwest region of South Korea, as part of the Stargate project.

Hitachi and its portfolio companies have signed several agreements within the data center space in 2025. Most notably, in June, the Japanese firm partnered with the regional transmission operator Southwest Power Pool to develop an Nvidia-powered artificial intelligence solution that reduces the duration of interconnection impact studies.
