Heartland Oil is planning a 7MW Bitcoin mine at an existing gas plant in Beaver River, Saskatchewan, Canada.

The proposal involves Orion Power Solutions and would add mining equipment within the footprint of the plant, which has operated since 1990.

According to a notice published by the municipality, generators would run on gas from the companies' own wells, without relying on SaskEnergy’s local supplies. The mining operation would also be independent of the SaskPower electricity grid.

The companies said the mining computers would require no water supply, and that no farmland would have to be converted. Noise testing is planned to assess and address potential impacts.

They said the project would diversify the plant's revenue and support its long-term viability, while providing construction and maintenance work.

An open house was advertised for October 15 at the Senior Citizens' Hall in Pierceland. The notice gives no construction timetable, capital cost or hardware specifications, and does not confirm whether approvals have been secured.

Heartland describes itself as a privately owned, natural gas-focused energy company operating in Saskatchewan. Its website lists 76 producing wells, three sales compressor stations and 450km of pipelines, and notes owning a 100 percent working interest in its wells and infrastructure.

Calgary-based Orion provides electricity consulting and services covering power supply, generating equipment, electrical interconnection, and data center setup, operations and maintenance.

Elsewhere in Saskatchewan, Bell Canada and the Government of Saskatchewan announced in September a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding for the phased expansion of up to 900MW of additional capacity at its planned data center. The planned site would represent the largest capital investment in Saskatchewan’s history, with a potential capital investment of more than $50 billion.
