Writing on LinkedIn, Terrell said: “It has been the thrill of a lifetime to help drive this transformation. We pioneered corporate clean energy procurement and deployed unprecedented amounts of wind, solar, and storage. We redefined the standard of leadership by targeting 24/7 carbon-free energy and establishing the ecosystem to measure and track it.

“To meet that ambitious goal, we pushed the frontier of what’s possible, catalyzing clean firm technologies like geothermal, nuclear, and LDES while also creating a blueprint for the future grid through load shifting, demand response, and virtual power plants. And by launching organizations like CEBA and AEMA, we helped build powerful communities to carry this momentum forward.”

Terrell held a myriad of positions at Google during his time there. In addition to being the company’s head of advanced energy, he also spent three years as its senior director of clean energy and carbon reduction, more than a year as its director of energy, and two years as its director of operations and head of energy market strategy.

Before joining Google, Terrell was an associate attorney at the law firm Van Ness Feldman, where he specialized in energy and climate change law and policy.

Following Terrell’s departure, Lucia Tian now heads Google’s advanced energy technologies division. She has held the position of director within the division since May. DCD has reached out to Google to determine whether the company intends to hire a direct replacement for Terrell.

During his time at Google, Terrell was involved in several high-profile agreements with emerging energy companies boasting a range of technologies. This included the company’s first deal with a long-duration storage company, Energy Dome; its first small modular reactor deal with Kairos Power; and its first agreement with an enhanced geothermal systems firm.
