OpenAI has hired Will Friedman as its new energy regulatory lead.

Friedman moves from Amazon Web Services, where he spent more than four years, most recently as its senior corporate counsel. Friedman has also held positions at law firms Davis Wright Tremaine LLP and McDermott Will & Schulte.

In this role, Friedman will manage energy regulatory strategy, policy execution, and infrastructure growth. This will include the evaluation of jurisdictional pathways, support in utility and energy transactions, and the coordination of regulatory approvals and filings.

According to the job posting earlier this year, the role is an individual contributor lead role and does not have direct reports initially.

OpenAI has been building out its energy team in recent years as it moves to take a more central role in energy procurement. Last month, the company advertised for a clean energy and new technology lead. The role's salary range is advertised as $223,000 to $385,000 per year and will be fully remote. The listing is now closed for applications.
