Google plans to invest up to $40 billion in generative AI business Anthropic.
The cloud giant will give the company $10bn upfront, with the remaining $30bn payable when Anthropic meets undisclosed performance milestones.
Google has invested more than $3.75bn into Anthropic across multiple earlier rounds, with court documents in 2025 revealing that it had a 14 percent stake in the business. Google has also provided financial backing for several data center projects set to host Anthropic.
Earlier this year, Anthropic signed a deal with Broadcom and Google for the supply of 3.5GW of Google TPUs, slated to come online from 2027.
Anthropic has pledged to invest $50bn in data centers in the US with Fluidstack. Those same projects are being financially supported by Google.
Both Amazon Web Services and Microsoft are also investors in Anthropic, and the company uses all three major cloud platforms. Earlier this month, Anthropic signed a cloud deal with CoreWeave.
