Turkcell and Google Cloud are teaming up to establish a cloud region in Turkey (officially known as Türkiye).

A public filing made by Turkcell states that the company will "collaborate with Google Cloud to deliver the infrastructure required for a planned new Google Cloud region in Türkiye," consisting of three or more zones.

Turkcell will double as both an infrastructure provider and a reseller of Google Cloud services in the country.

The filing states: "This milestone underscores Turkcell's commitment to accelerating Türkiye's digital transformation, while strengthening its role in establishing the country as a regional hub for digital and AI innovation. As part of Turkcell's strategic growth projections, Turkcell expects its data center capacity to increase by more than double by the end of 2032, and Turkcell targets a sixfold increase in its data center and cloud revenues in USD terms over the same period."

Turkcell estimates that it will invest some $1bn in the data centers and cloud region by 2032. Google has said it will invest $2bn in the facility over 10 years.

Speaking to Bloomberg, Turkcell's CEO, Ali Taha Koc, said: "It will be the first hyperscale data center in Türkiye. The agreement will make Turkcell a cloud center globally.”

Earlier this year, Turkcell secured €100 million ($112.5m) in murabaha financing to expand its data center footprint. On its website, Turkcell says it operates eight core data centers across four markets in Tekirdag, Gebze, Ankara, and Izmir, totaling 122,000 sqm (1,313,197 sq ft) - 32,000 sqm (344,445 sq ft) of white space - and 41.5MW. At the time of securing the funding, the company was aiming to add a further 8.4MW to the current footprint by the end of 2025.

The majority of Türkiye's data centers are located around Istanbul, with a small secondary market in Ankara. Operators in the country include Equinix, Sparkle, TurkNet, and ComNet, among others.
