Google and AirTrunk have signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with energy provider OX2 in Australia.

The agreement will see OX2 develop a new solar farm in the Riverina district of New South Wales, from which Google and AirTrunk will receive 25MW of renewable power.

AirTrunk will procure the renewable energy, and the associated energy attribute certificates (EACs) will time-match Google's consumption. Google has cloud regions in Melbourne and Sydney.

Current timelines should see the solar farm generating power by 2025.

"As a leader in hyperscale data centers in Asia-Pacific & Japan, AirTrunk is committed to accelerating the energy transition to achieve Net Zero by 2030,” said Damien Spillane, AirTrunk chief customer and innovation officer. “Our collaboration with Google and OX2 will deliver new renewable energy capacity into the grid on the east coast of Australia. Developments like this are critical to accelerating progress towards a carbon-free future in Australia.”

Rachel Watson, OX2 Australia country manager added: “This is a very exciting project for OX2 to be involved in, as we establish a new relationship with AirTrunk and Google. Their commitment to buying carbon-free energy is helping to accelerate the energy transition, and get more renewable energy into the system.”

Google has a goal to run on 24/7 carbon-free energy on every grid where it operates by 2030.

Google is a major customer of PPAs. In the last year alone, the company has signed PPAs in Ireland, Poland, Belgium, the Netherlands, and several across the US including North and South Carolina, Texas, in addition to a 650MW PPA that will cross six states.

In 2022, AirTrunk signed a renewable energy agreement in Hong Kong to offset Microsoft's energy use in its facilities.
