At least one person was hurt during an excavation incident at a data center construction site in Finland.

As reported by local press, including Vihdin Uutiset and Lansi-Uusimaa, the incident occurred late last month at a site on the Rostintie road in Vihti, a municipality some 50km north of the capital Helsinki.

The Länsi-Uusimaa Police Department is investigating the excavation explosion at the construction site in Vihti, which occurred at approximately 11:45 am on Thursday, 17th December.

According to police records, one of the employees at the site was slightly injured by rubble that was blown outside the safety zone. Construction site containers and vehicles were also said to be damaged by the stones.

Microsoft is developing a data center site in Vihti. Work started on the site in September. The company first announced plans for a Finnish cloud region in March 2022, and is also developing facilities in Kirkkonummi and Espoo.

The company acquired the Vihti site in the Rosti Business Park for €12.3 million ($13.3m) in 2023. Initially comprising one building, the Vihti site could total up to four facilities. The first could go live as soon as 2026.

Mercury and Destia are contractors on the project, known as HEL10 by Mercury.
