Digital Realty has launched a new data center in Barcelona, Spain.

The company this week announced the opening of its first data center in Barcelona, BCN1, located at Av. del Maresme, 43 in the Sant Adrià de Besòs innovation area.

Digital Realty, via its subsidiary company Interxion, announced plans for a 15MW data center in Barcelona in 2022. This week, the company said the new data center offers 14MW of total planned capacity across 15,000 sqm (161,455 sq ft)

Together with our campuses in Madrid and Lisbon, we are proud to offer our customers a highly interconnected and environmentally responsible regional platform on the Iberian Peninsula.”

Digital said the Barcelona site will connect to the company’s established southern European connectivity hub in Marseille, France. Subsea cables currently or due to land in the Catalonian city include 2Africa and Medusa in Barcelona.

BCN1 will use HVO100 – a biodiesel – to power its backup generators.

Digital currently operates four other data centers in Spain, all around Madrid. Plans for a fifth Madrid facility are in the works.

The company is also developing its first data center in neighboring Portugal, with plans for a 2.4MW facility in Lisbon due live next year.
