Colo giant Equinix announced today that it would be building its fourth Malaysian data center, KL2, in Kuala Lumpur, the country’s capital.
The $190 million facility will have more than 2,200 cabinets at completion, but details about its size and IT capacity were not provided.
Equinix says that the data center will be less than 1km from its KL1 data center, located in Cyberjaya, a planned city south of Kuala Lumpur proper that is home to other tech and science infrastructure.
The land for the facility was acquired back in July 2024 and spans 14,300 sqm (153,924 sq ft). At the time, Equinix acquired the parcel for around RM23 million ($5.8m).
The facility will be used for “AI and high-performance computing” and will employ liquid cooling.
Equinix’s three other Malaysian data centers – JH1, JH2, and KL1 – are located in Johor and Cyberjaya, respectively.
JH2 is an expansion of JH1. JH1 was announced back in 2022, and launched in 2024. JH2 was later topped out in 2025. The first phase of JH2, set to come online in Q1 2027, will add 7MW of IT capacity, and it was previously reported that the company was in discussions to acquire more land to build the campus out to 77MW.
