Equinix has signed a ten-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with French renewable developer Neoen.
Under the terms of the PPA, Neoen will supply Equinix with 53MW of energy from seven solar projects across northern Italy. The PPA is structured using a portfolio approach.
Equinix will use the energy to power 100 percent of the electricity demand of its IBX data centers in Italy.
Equinix has six operational data centers in Italy across Genoa and Milan.
“The backing of the development of seven new solar projects in the country actively contributes to Italy’s decarbonization targets and aligns with our goal of achieving 100 percent renewable energy coverage by 2030 as well as our commitments to driving positive change and advancing sustainability in the data center industry as a whole," Marco Matarazzo director of IBX operations, Italy at Equnix said.
The PPA is the first between the two companies in Italy and their fifth across Europe in the last three years. The five PPAs represent a contracted capacity of 210MW.
Three of the PPAs signed between the two companies were in Finland. In January 2023, the companies signed a ten-year PPA, which will see Equinix offtake 60 percent of the 95MW Storbötet wind farm.
In January 2022, Equinix signed a deal to procure 85 percent of the energy and guarantees of origin produced by the 35MW Björkliden wind farm. The following July, the colocation firm signed a deal to procure at least 42MW wind capacity from the 53MW Lumivaara wind park.
Following this agreement, Equinix has signed 1.4GW of renewable energy contracts worldwide.
