A local county commission has granted tax breaks for a data center being built in the city of Bryan, Texas.

Brazos County commissioners this week approved an economic development agreement granting $9 million in property tax breaks to Rellis Campus Data and Research Center, LLC.

Rellis is leasing 25 acres of land on the Texas A&M University System Rellis campus and plans to build a 225,000 sq ft data center with offices and classroom facilities. Terms of the deal require construction to begin by November 1, 2021.

WTAW reports the only opposition was retired Bryan city councilman Mike Southerland, who asked commissioners to reconsider their decision, saying in part there was no reason to give money to a project that is already coming here.

According to the Rellis site, the facility will be built to Tier III standards and offer colocation services, as well as training opportunities for students. The plans have been designed by Corgan Architects and is due to open in ‘Fall 2022.'

“We’re creating high-tech jobs in the Brazos Valley, right here in the City of Bryan,” Mayor Andrew Nelson previously said of the project.

“Hopefully be a catalyst for a lot of tech growth here in the City of Bryan.”

A&M’s Rellis campus is on the former Bryan Air Base, a 2,000-acre World War II facility west of the main Texas A&M University campus.

Rellis Campus Data is owned by Sam Tenorio III, who is founder and CEO of Seamless Advanced Solutions, an Austin, Texas-based IT services firm.
