The construction of a data center in Hong Kong’s new tech hub has begun.

A groundbreaking ceremony for the facility took place on Saturday March 2026, with Hong Kong’s Secretary for Innovation, Technology, and Industry, Sun Dong, in attendance.

Earlier this month, mainland Chinese company Range Intelligent Computing Technology won a tender to build a data center on a 116,365 sqm (1.3 million sq ft) land parcel in the Northern Metropolis, a proposed tech park located in northern Hong Kong near the city’s border with mainland China.

The parcel is in the development’s ‘Boundary Commerce and Industry Zone’ located in Sandy Ridge, just across the Shenzhen River from the eponymous southern Chinese manufacturing city of Shenzhen.

Range was given the land grant for a term of 50 years, and it is expected to invest HKD$23.8 billion ($3bn) in the project.

The data center is expected to offer a total gross floor area of 250,000 sqm (2.7 million sq ft) and is estimated to provide 180,000 PFLOPS of computing power by 2032.

Range currently operates six data centers in northern China around the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, and the company says that it has plans to build 22.
