US data center firm Cologix is expanding its footprint in Canada, acquiring a local carrier hotel in Calgary.

The Stonepeak-backed company this week announced its acquisition of DataHiveOne, Calgary’s primary carrier hotel, as well as most of DataHive’s colocation and interconnection assets. The move marks Cologix's first move into Calgary.

Terms of the deal were not shared.

DataHiveOne, located at 840 7 Ave SW, houses more than 30 networks. including the region’s internet exchange, YYCIX. In operation for more than 20 years, the data center totals around 5,000 sq ft (465 sqm). Built around 1979, the entire building totals 21 stories and 18,350 sq ft (1,705 sqm).

It provides them with the dense network access, low latency, and data sovereignty they need, helping us meet the increasing demand for reliable, secure connectivity."

As well as DataHiveOne, DataHive operates a second facility (DataHiveTwo, launched last year) in the city at 801 Seventh (aka the Nexen Building), totaling around 9,000 sq ft (836 sqm).

Cologix lists 840 7 Ave SW on its website, but not 801 Seventh. The company says the facility offers 3,700 sq ft (343.7 sqm) of colocation space and 1,100 sq ft (102 sqm) of office space. The site has 70kW of available power, with additional capacity for racks and cages.

According to local press, Zingle founded DataHive in 2004, at the age of 69, after taking over a struggling web hosting business and its data center, reportedly run by the son of Iraq’s opposition leader.

DataHive has previously announced a deal with eStruxture to offer space in the latter’s CAL-1 facility.

Cologix has a portfolio of more than 40 'hyperscale Edge' data centers and interconnection hubs across 12 North American Markets. The company operates 22 other data centers in Canada across Montréal (12), Toronto (5), and Vancouver (5) totaling more than 1 million sq ft (92,903 sqm) and 94MW.

Earlier this year, the firm took full ownership of two data centers in Toronto from CIM Group. The firm previously acquired two Canadian assets from Cyxtera in 2023. In 2019, the company acquired both Colo-D and Metro Optic to expand its footprint in Canada, while 2021 also saw the company acquire a Zayo facility in Vancouver.
