Cloud computing company Civo has launched a second cloud region in the UK with sustainability-focused data center provider Deep Green.
Deep Green is also set to launch another data center that will heat a local swimming pool, located at the York Stadium Leisure Complex.
Civo's newest cloud region, known as LON2, is located in Swindon, Berkshire, and has been deployed to help meet increasing demand for high-performance cloud services, including access to GPUs.
Established in partnership with Deep Green, the new region is powered by 100 percent renewable energy and is housed in a Carbon-Z colocation data center.
According to Carbon-Z's website, the company specializes in high-density computing and GPU workloads, with immersion-based cooling as its "flagship default option." The company also offers direct-to-chip cooling.
The new region has increased Civo's capacity for high-performance computing, which means customers can now handle more intensive and complex workloads.
Mark Boost, CEO and co-founder of Civo said: “Sustainability is at the heart of our mission at Civo. As demand for cloud solutions surges, we are committed to ensuring that the benefits of this technology don’t come at the expense of our environment. It’s a pleasure to be working alongside Deep Green, a partner we have trusted for several years to deliver on our environmental commitment.
“With the introduction of LON2, we’re taking an important step toward building a more responsible and environmentally conscious cloud industry. Together with Deep Green, we’re demonstrating that cloud innovation can, and should, be built on a foundation of sustainability.”
Mark Bjornsgaard, founder and CEO of Deep Green, added: “We’re all well aware of the environmental footprint left by the tech industry. By partnering with Civo to launch LON2, we’re on a mission to change the narrative. This collaboration is about proving that innovation and sustainability can go hand in hand. With 100 percent renewable energy powering LON2 and a shared commitment to exploring further eco-friendly solutions, we’re making meaningful strides towards a greener future for cloud computing.”
Deep Green and Civo have been working together since September 2023, with Civo signed on as Deep Green's exclusive partner for its poolside-based servers.
Deep Green plans another digital boiler-heated swimming pool
Elsewhere in the UK, Deep Green is working towards deploying a data center in North Yorkshire.
Excess heat from that data center, which would be located next door to the York Stadium Leisure Complex in Huntingdon, would be used to heat the swimming pool, reports YorkMix.
Following the company's flagship "digital boiler" housed in Exmouth, Devon, and used to heat a swimming pool, Deep Green is clearly seeking other opportunities for its solution.
The data center in Huntingdon will be built within an acoustic enclosure at the eastern end of a car park on the site, and will feature chillers, air coolers, and a backup generator. The facility will be connected to the leisure center via underground pipes, so as to enable the reuse of waste heat.
The application noted: "In the case of the proposed development, not only will energy consumption be reduced through heat transfer, but the current energy consumption of the existing leisure center will also be reduced following the decreased need to draw energy from other sources.
“In this regard, the proposals provide benefit both to the development itself and also the existing building on site which is a significant advantage and true form of sustainable development.”
