South Korean online platform Naver has signed a 25-year wind Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with South Korean renewable energy firm GS Wind Power.

Under the terms of the PPA, GS will supply Naver with energy from its under-construction wind power complex in Yeongyang-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do, located in the east of the country.

According to GS, the complex, which is expected to reach commercial operations in H1 2028, will produce approximately 180GWh of power on an annual basis.

Naver intends to use the contracted capacity to power its data centers in Sejong and Chuncheon. According to the firm, through the PPA, the company expects to increase its renewable energy conversion rate to approximately 46 percent by 2029.

"As power demand for data centers is rapidly increasing due to the expansion of AI and cloud services, securing renewable energy is an essential task," said Lim Dong-ah, Naver’s External and ESG Policy leader.

"We will strengthen energy supply stability through a new model of direct investment in power generation corporations and continue our efforts to achieve the 2040 carbon negative target."

In addition to the PPA, Naver also acquired a 30 percent stake in the wind farm, which it claims is the first instance in Korea where a RE100 member company has secured renewable energy through direct investment in a renewable energy power generation company.

Naver offers public cloud services through its multi-region Ncloud and its on-premise Neurocloud service. The company currently operates three data centers within South Korea. Last November, the company announced that it was expanding its Sejong facility to 270MW, with the works expected to be finished sometime in 2029.

Naver Cloud currently lists six cloud regions in South Korea, as well as one each in Japan, Germany, Singapore, and the US (West Coast); future regions are planned in the US (East Coast), Vietnam, Taiwan, and Thailand. It previously exited Hong Kong. The company also lists plans for a 10MW site in Charlotte, North Carolina, and a capacity totaling 40MW across Sweden.
