UK-based cloud provider Civo has launched a sovereign cloud region in Mumbai, India.

The launch is part of a $25.52 million investment in the country and will see India join Civo's existing regions across Europe, North America, and Asia.

In a statement, Civo said it aims to provide an equitable model of cloud computing in India that prioritizes data sovereignty and cost efficiency. The cloud region has been developed with support from the British High Commission in India and HM Government.

The Mumbai Cloud Region will be priced the same as other Civo regions, which the company claims will be around 50 percent cheaper than "Big Tech" competitors in India.

The region is housed in a Sify Technologies data center and runs on up to 80 percent renewable energy.

From the facility, Civo will offer cloud-native solutions, including Kubernetes, infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS), and platform-as-a-service (PaaS), among other offerings.

Mark Boost, CEO and co-founder of Civo, said: “At Civo, we believe that innovators the world over deserve fully sovereign, secure, and scalable cloud solutions. India’s surging cloud market has a golden opportunity to forge a new path that puts users first, and we’re thrilled to have the chance to offer our Indian customers cloud-native technologies and help businesses in the region to build their technologies on a foundation of transparency and fairness.”

Anna Shotbolt, Deputy Trade Commissioner for South Asia at the British High Commission added: “The UK’s tech sector is the third largest in the world, valued at $1 trillion. The UK and India are committed to working together on the defining technologies of this decade, such as artificial intelligence (AI) and semiconductors, through the recently launched UK-India Technology Security Initiative.

"Civo’s expansion into India is a pertinent example of this commitment, leveraging the vibrant talent and innovation in tech across both countries to boost mutual growth. My best wishes to Civo as they enter one of the fastest growing markets in the world.”

Sify Technologies has three data center locations in Mumbai, one of which is described as AI-ready and called Mumbai O3 Rabale. The company launched a GPU cloud offering in October this year and launched a data center for India's Supreme Court earlier this week.

Elsewhere, Civo has partnered with sustainability-focused UK data center provider Deep Green, which uses waste heat from data centers to heat local swimming pools.

Civo launched a cloud GPU offering in April 2024 featuring Nvidia A100 GPUs.
