A new subsea cable has landed in Hong Kong.

China Telecom announced earlier this month that the Asia Link Cable (ALC) made landfall at the company’s new Chung Hom Kok Cable Landing Station on 14 May.

“Led by China Telecom together with 13 Asia‑Pacific operators, ALC marks a major step forward for regional connectivity,” the company said. “With ALC now landed, China Telecom will continue to expand its global digital infrastructure, enabling seamless data flows for cloud computing, AI, and cross‑border innovation – building a smarter, more connected future for Asia and beyond.”

The 6,200km (3,852 miles) system runs from Hong Kong to Hainan province in China, Singapore, the Philippines, Vietnam, Brunei, and Malaysia. It offers 325Tbps of capacity, with China Telecom owning around 100Tbps of that.

China Telecom noted the project is Hainan’s first international sub-sea cable, and the company’s second landing in Hong Kong, following the full commissioning of the Asia Direct Cable system last year.

The company said the 1.25MW Chung Hom Kok Cable Landing Station is China Telecom’s first self-built cable landing station outside mainland China. Located at Rural Building Lot No. 1220, the 2,200 sqm (23,680 sq ft) facility can host up to five cables. China Telecom secured a 30-year lease for the land in 2022.

Plans for the ALC system were first announced in late 2022. Partners on the project include Singtel, China Unicom, Globe, FPT Telecom, Time doCom, Telekom Malaysia, Vietnam’s VNPT and Viettel Corporation, DITO of the Philippines, and UNN of Brunei.

According to the government of Hong Kong, the territory hosts more than a dozen cables across ten cable landing stations.
