TikTok's parent company ByteDance is taking up approximately one-fifth of all data center capacity in China.

According to SemiAnalysis, which analyzed information on 1,000 data centers and 60 providers in the country, China currently has a data center market of more than 24GW, along with a 20GW pipeline and 30GW of other announced projects.

Of that 24GW, ByteDance represents around one-fifth, almost all of which is leased capacity. Hard data on ByteDance's footprint, however, remains elusive, with the company currently a privately held business.

DCD has reached out to ByteDance for comment.

The company is, however, ahead of the likes of Alibaba Cloud, Tencent, Baidu, and Huawei. Alibaba, Tencent, and Baidu adopt a combination of self-built facilities and leased capacity, while Huawei opts for almost entirely a self-built footprint in the country.

SemiAnalysis further notes that the aforementioned Chinese hyperscalers also lease capacity abroad, expected to reach approximately 4GW of capacity and double between 2026 and 2029.

Earlier this year, ByteDance reportedly signed a 500MW data center agreement with Vnet for its data centers in China. The company was also said to be building a $614m AI data center in Shanxi province, China, within Guangling County's Economic Development Zone Big Data Park in eastern Datong.

In September 2026, the South China Morning Post reported that ByteDance was in talks with local data center providers to add between five and six gigawatts’ worth of compute in the city of Ulanqab, Inner Mongolia.

ByteDance is also a customer of a ChinData data center at its Taihang Mountain Energy and Information Technology Industrial Campus near Datong in North China's Shanxi province.

Outside of China, ByteDance is the anchor tenant at Bridge Data Centres' facility in Johor, Malaysia, and is known to be working with DayOne in Singapore and targeting developments in Thailand, Brazil, and Australia. In the US, TikTok is hosted in an Oracle data center in Texas, while in Europe, the firm is leasing data centers in Norway from Green Mountain and working with Hyperco and DayOne in Finland.

As well as the social media platform TikTok, ByteDance has a cloud offering known as Volcano Engine.
