Southeast Asian data center developer Bridge Data Centres (BDC) has signed an Electricity Supply Agreement (ESA) with Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB).
The ESA will deliver 400MW of energy to BDC's MY07 data center, which is currently under development in Johor Ulu Tiram, Malaysia.
As part of the partnership, the two parties signed a Bilateral Energy Supply Contract and Head of Terms agreement under the Corporate Renewable Energy Supply Scheme (CRESS).
CRESS is a Malaysian state-backed scheme introduced in September. It aims to promote the adoption of green energy amongst corporate companies in Peninsular Malaysia by allowing participants to supply or purchase electricity through open access to the grid network system with a predetermined system access charge.
“BDC becomes the first partner under the CRESS framework, a milestone facilitated by our wholly-owned subsidiary, TNB Renewables Sdn Bhd,” said Datuk Ir Megat Jalaluddin Bin Megat Hassan, president and CEO of TNB.
The partnership will facilitate the development of a framework for BDC to incorporate renewable energy into its operations.
“This collaboration aligns with global trends in green data center operations and contributes to Malaysia’s renewable energy transition goals,” Eric Fan, CEO of BDC, said.
BDS currently has five other data centers in operation or development across Malaysia.
The company operates two facilities in Cyberjaya with a third in development, and launched a data center outside Johor in 2022. The company announced plans for the first 16MW building at its MY03 site in Kuala Lumpur’s Mranti Park in 2021 and announced an expansion last year.
TNB is Malaysia’s largest utility. In the renewable space, it has a portfolio totaling 3,119MW across Malaysia, including 2,536MW of large hydro. TNB also transmits and distributes all the electricity in Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah, and the Federal Territory of Labuan.
