Amazon Web Services (AWS) has launched a Wavelength Zone Edge location in Kansas City, Kansas.
The company this week announced the general availability of AWS Wavelength in partnership with Verizon in the Lenexa area of Kansas City. AWS’ US East (N. Virginia) Region is the parent of the new Wavelength location.
Wavelength embeds AWS compute and storage services at the Edge of communications service providers’ 5G networks. The company says Wavelength minimizes latency and the network hops required to connect from a 5G device to an application hosted on AWS because application traffic can reach servers without leaving the mobile provider's network. Amazon’s compute and storage services are located within the telco providers’ data centers.
“By integrating seamlessly with Amazon EC2, EBS, ALB, VPC, Data Transfer, and other AWS services, Wavelength Zones allow developers to easily extend their applications to the Edge, ensuring data remains within specified geographical boundaries while maintaining high performance and reliability,” the company said.
“This expansion addresses the growing need for Edge computing solutions that can handle diverse workloads while meeting complex regulatory and operational requirements.”
Wavelength Zones were first announced in partnership with Verizon in December 2019, when a pilot project was launched in Los Angeles. Wavelength Zones are now available in 19 other US cities in conjunction with the US telco.
The company has also launched zones in the UK with BT and Vodafone, South Korea with SK Telecom, Germany via Vodafone, Japan through KDDI, Canada with Bell Canada, and Morocco and Senegal with Orange.
Telefónica previously announced it was trialing a Wavelength Zone in Madrid, Spain, but it has yet to officially launch; Vodafone has previously said it will also launch a zone in Spain.
DataBank, TierPoint, and LightEdge operate facilities in Lenexa, with others including QTS and Netrality nearby on the Kansas side of the border.
