US data center developer Applied Digital has expanded its partnership with power technology provider ABB, which will supply power infrastructure for the company’s second AI campus in North Dakota, US.

The expansion builds on an agreement struck earlier this year between the two firms, under which ABB committed to supply Applied with its HiPerGuard Medium Voltage Static Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) for Applied's 400MW data center campus in Dickey County, North Dakota.

"The medium voltage architecture developed with Applied Digital is a big step forward for large-scale AI facilities. Working together closely from the start enabled both teams to identify opportunities to drive higher efficiency, performance, and reliability, along with lower costs and faster time to market,” said ABB smart power president Massimiliano Cifalitti.

The expansion will see ABB deliver low and medium-voltage electrical architecture for Applied's planned 300MW Polaris Forge 2 campus near Harwood, North Dakota. ABB will also deploy its HiPerGuard UPS at the Forge 2 campus. The campus is scheduled to reach operational status in 2026 and 2027, phased across two buildings.

"Polaris Forge 2 represents the next evolution of our AI Factory model - beginning with two 150MW buildings with the ability to scale - solidifying our position as a leader in delivering high-performance, energy-efficient AI infrastructure.”

The new data center is located some 140 miles (225.3km) northwest of the new site. Groundbreaking at the Ellendale site occurred in 2022, with the data center since repurposed from cryptomine hosting to AI and HPC as part of a major deal with AI cloud firm CoreWeave. Last month, the firm made the first 50MW phase of its Ellendale, North Dakota, data center ready for service.

Elsewhere, Applied has a 106MW facility in Jamestown, North Dakota, known as JMS01, and is also planning a 200MW facility in Iowa.

Earlier this month, Applied signed a deal with US energy technology provider Babcock & Wilcox for more than 1GW of natural gas capacity to power one of its AI data centers.
