Amazon has signed a 57MW Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Avangrid for energy from a solar energy project in Gilliam County, Oregon.

The Oregon Trail Solar project is expected to start construction soon and is slated to reach operational status by 2027.

"This agreement reflects Amazon and Avangrid’s commitment to delivering reliable energy solutions that will help meet America’s growing energy needs and support the growth of critical infrastructure," said Jose Antonio Miranda, Avangrid CEO.

"Oregon Trail Solar builds on our strong presence in Oregon and deep partnership with Amazon, and we’re proud to help power the future with projects that bring lasting economic benefits to local communities, bolster our nation’s energy independence, and maximize energy production."

According to Avangrid, the construction of the solar farm is expected to generate 200 jobs, filled mainly by local union labor. When constructed, it will comprise more than 100,000 solar panels.

“Oregon Trail Solar is yet another example of how Avangrid works with local communities to build America’s energy future,” said Sy Oytan, Avangrid Power CEO. “With this new project, we are adding to our existing investments in Gilliam County and Oregon in a way that strengthens the region while producing electricity to help meet the growing energy demand across the country.”

The PPA is the second between the two companies, following a 98.4MW agreement signed in February 2024 for energy from the 119MW Leaning Juniper IIA wind farm in Gilliam County, Oregon. The PPA will support the repowering of the wind farm, which will see its existing wind turbines replaced by new, more efficient ones. The repowering project is expected to be completed by Q4 of 2025.

Its sister wind farm, Leaning Juniper IIB project, is also going through a similar repowering process. The project is tied to a long-term PPA with Google signed earlier this year, which will see the search giant offtake 100MW of power from the wind farm. The repowering effort will see the wind farm's capacity boosted from 111MW to 119MW.

Avangrid is the North American arm of Spanish electrical utility Iberdrola. The company has a considerable presence in Oregon, operating more than 2.5GW of renewable capacity. Across the US, the company operates more than 10.5GW of capacity across 80 generation facilities.

Its parent company, Iberdrola, has signed several PPAs with Amazon over recent years. In 2023, the two companies signed a spate of agreements across Germany, the US, and Asia-Pacific.

Amazon has been present in the Oregon market since 2011. In 2017, it expanded into Hermiston, in Umatilla County. Earlier this year, Amazon announced it was in the process of securing 400 acres in Arlington for a data center project.
