Amazon Web Services has opened a new cloud region in Zurich, Switzerland.
“I am pleased to announce today the opening of our 28th AWS Region: Europe (Zurich), also known by its API name: eu-central-2,” said Sébastien Stormacq, principal developer advocate for AWS.
The region has gone live with three availability zones located ‘in the vicinity’ of Zurich.
The company first announced plans for a Swiss cloud region in late 2020 and said it plans to invest up to 5.9 billion Swiss francs (approximately $5.9 billion) in the Europe (Zurich) Region from 2022–2036
Existing Swiss AWS customers include Fisch Asset Management, Helvetia, Richemont, Swiss Broadcasting Corporation (RSI), Swiss Post, Swisscom, and Swisstopo.
Microsoft launched two Swiss Azure regions in 2019; Switzerland North in Zürich and Switzerland West in Geneva. Google also launched a Zurich GCP region in 2019.
November has also seen AWS open a Spanish region in Aragón.
