Amazon has signed nine Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) across Australia for approximately 430MW of power.

The portfolio of assets includes one wind farm, three utility-scale solar and battery hybrids, four distributed solar-battery projects, and a battery energy storage system (BESS) at the 56MW Mokoan Solar Farm, in Hume, Victoria, which is already tied to a PPA with Amazon signed in June of last year.

The contracted projects include large-scale projects such as the 201.8MW Golden Plains 2 onshore wind farm in Victoria, being developed by TagEnergy, OX2’s 94.5MW/70MW Muswellbrook solar and battery project in NSW, X-Elio’s 72MW/72MW solar and battery project also in NSW, and Anza’s 48MW/48MW solar and storage project in Laceby, Victoria.

The PPAs also include four smaller-scale distributed hybrid solar battery projects. They include a 3.8MW/3.8MW in Stanbridge, NSW, developed by Anza, and three projects in Victoria being developed by Indigo, Barnawartha, and Mooroopna, with capacities of 3.6MW, 3.6MW, and 3.4MW, respectively, each paired with equivalent BESS. The final PPA is tied to the aforementioned Mokoan solar farm, which includes 32MW of energy storage.

Eight of the PPAs incorporate BESS systems, representing the first contracted capacity from such projects outside the US market.

Following the latest deals, the company has now contracted approximately 990MW of capacity. Amazon said that the PPAs will support its plans to invest AU$20 billion (US$13bn) by 2029 in expanding data center infrastructure in Australia. The investment package announced in June of last year is expected to see the firm develop additional data centers and expand its existing portfolio in Sydney and Melbourne.

At the same time, the company announced investments into three solar farms in Victoria and Queensland, including the Mokoan solar farm.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) first entered Australia in 2012 when it launched a cloud region in Sydney. A second region was added in 2023, located in Melbourne. An AWS Local Zone was launched that same year in Perth.

In July 2024, AWS announced it was building a data center for the Australian government that would handle "top-secret" data. The data center and cloud system are being developed as a partnership between AWS and the Australian government, with the latter committing to investing AU$2 billion (US$1.3 billion) in the new system over the next ten years.

Last year also saw AWS planning new data centers in Melbourne and Sydney, though it later withdrew the Sydney application. The Melbourne facility is a $50m data center on a 13.2-hectare site at 54-80 Ferris Road, Cobblebank, about 40km west of Melbourne’s center.
