Cooling design as a critical part of data center permitting

Data center projects are facing tougher questions about water, electricity costs and noise, often long after the cooling system has been specified. Those questions can hold up permits, delay construction and force expensive changes to the design. Water withdrawal and discharge, noise at the property line and the load a utility must approve are all shaped by decisions made in the mechanical plant. Drawing on experience operating a liquid-cooled facility under state water permits, this session examines how low-approach CDUs, alternative water sources and reduction in chiller usage can change what a project asks of its surroundings. It also looks at how these pressures differ between the US and Europe, and what developers need to address before submitting their plans. This episode will discuss:

  • How cooling design affects water permits, property-line noise limits and utility reviews
  • Understanding the difference between water withdrawal and consumption in local communities
  • How reduction in chiller usage can reduce power demand, refrigerant use and environmental impact
  • Addressing regulatory and community requirements early in the facility basis of design
