He previously served as CEO for Liquid Intelligent Technologies and held roles at Airtel and Pan African Towers. In his new role, Abu will oversee Equinix’s operations in Nigeria, Ghana, and Cote d’Ivoire.

On X, formerly known as Twitter, Abu said: “Equinix is a company with a clear vision for a connected Africa. The company’s dedication to advancing digitalization in Africa is something that matters to me personally.”

Opeke previously served roles at Verizon and MTN Nigeria, before founding MainOne in 2015. It was then acquired by Equinix for $320 million in 2021.

She will now step into a strategic advisory role for the West African region until March 2026.

MainOne will retain its brand, whilst its West African data center division MDXi was recently rebranded under the Equinix name earlier this year.

MDXi operates five data centers across West Africa in the Ivory Coast (x2), Ghana, and Nigeria (x2). Its second Ivory Coast facility launched at the end of last year on the outskirts of Abidjan. Its first Ivory Coast facility is a prefab module, offering capacity for 100 racks.
