Virginia-based broadband provider Firefly Fiber Broadband (FFB) has launched a campaign that urges local hunters to avoid hitting fiber cables and power lines when shooting.

The campaign, called “Be a Good Neighbor” was announced by Firefly, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Central Virginia Electric Cooperative (CVEC), this week.

Firefly notes that the campaign aims to raise awareness and prevent accidental damage to fiber and utility lines, which can disrupt service and result in costly repairs.

Hunting has disrupted Firefly's network in the past, with the company asking hunters not to aim at doves perched on powerlines.

The company wants the campaign to prevent outages.

In its press release, the company revealed an image (pictured) of the damage that bullets can cause to its cables.

“Fiber lines don’t just carry Internet — they carry our neighbors’ ability to work, learn, and stay connected,” said Firefly communications manager, Melissa Gay. “With our ‘Be a Good Neighbor’ campaign, we’re asking the community to look out for one another by protecting this shared resource.”

Firefly reiterates in its campaign that it's dangerous and illegal to shoot at power or fiber lines, while outages can also lead to safety issues for residents and public safety officials.
