Verizon Business has announced the deployment of a full spectrum private 5G network servicing the veterans' hospital in Livermore, California.

The US carrier has carried out the deployment through a partnership with the VA Palo Alto Health Care System.

Verizon has been working with the United States Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) since 2020, which started with the announcement of VA Palo Alto Health Care System as the VA’s first 5G-enabled healthcare facility.

According to Verizon, this new network enables advanced clinical capabilities such as augmented reality-assisted presurgical guidance with virtual 3D X-ray vision with the incorporation of CT and MRI scans.

Verizon has also suggested virtual reality-assisted medical learning, which involves the use of 3D models of humans, plus the use of digital twins.

The service provided to the hospital is provisioned by Verizon's private 5G MEC infrastructure, as the operator built commercial in-building 5G systems across the entire facility before deploying the private network.

These in-building systems have been integrated with 5G rooftop macro sites to provide a campus-wide service. Verizon notes that these 5G systems utilize all three 5G frequency bands.

"The work VA Palo Alto Health Care System is doing is a shining example of what the partnership between the VA and Verizon makes possible,” said Kyle Malady, Verizon Business CEO.

“Data is always important, but it’s critical in healthcare settings. The speed and low latency of Verizon’s 5G technology releases data, which in turn delivers unprecedented capabilities, reduces costs, and improves efficiencies so that the medical center can focus on clinical care and healthcare outcomes.”

Verizon notes that its 5G technology will provide "exponentially greater bandwidth, providing VA Palo Alto with the ability to unlock the potential of complex medical data."

It adds that through its cloud-based servers on the Edge, it will be able to support physicians to make real-time, data-informed decisions about the best course of care through the use of AI.

Last month, Verizon Public Sector announced a nine-year expansion of its partnership with the VA, worth $448.3 million, through which the network provider will supply mobile devices and mission-critical communications systems.
