The University of Wyoming (UW) could take over operational control of the NCAR-Wyoming Supercomputing Center.
According to a report from the Wyoming Tribune Eagle, the National Science Foundation (NSF) has offered UW the opportunity to submit a proposal for management of the facility, which hosts hardware focused on climate and weather modelling.
The news comes a week after the NSF informed the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) that it is transitioning management and operation of the NCAR-Wyoming Supercomputing Center to a third party.
Plans by the US government to dismantle NCAR were first reported in December 2025, with the decision thought to be driven, in part, by President Donald Trump’s dislike of Colorado’s Democratic Governor Jared Polis.
The governor has continually refused to grant a pardon to Tina Peters, who was jailed for nine years after being found guilty of committing criminal acts as part of an effort to prove Trump’s false claims of widespread voter fraud following the 2020 election.
Separately, Russ Vought, the director of the Office of Management and Budget, also labeled NCAR “one of the largest sources of climate alarmism in the country,” in a post on social media platform X last year.
“The supercomputing center and the Derecho NSF-supported computing facility within are great assets for the university and state, and UW is a heavy user of the computer,” UW said in a statement to the Wyoming Tribune Eagle. “We are closely following the process laid out by the NSF for next steps, and have conveyed our interest in playing an appropriate role to support it in the future.”
The new outlet further reported that a spokesperson for NSF said it could not disclose what other agencies were offered the opportunity to submit a proposal for operations.
Opened in 2012, the NCAR-Wyoming Supercomputing Center runs weather and climate research models that are accessed by 1,500 researchers from more than 500 universities across the US. In August 2023, the center launched its Derecho supercomputer, a HPE Cray EX cluster offering 19.87 petaflops of compute power. The system features 2,488 compute nodes with 128 AMD Milan cores per node, and 82 nodes with four Nvidia A100 GPUs each.
