Uber is planning to establish a data center in India with Adani Group.

Uber's CEO, Dara Khosrowshahi, revealed the plans via a post on X after meeting with Adani Group founder and chairman Gautam Adani in Ahmedabad.

Khosrowshahi wrote: "As India fast emerges as a leading innovation hub for Uber, we are setting up our first data center in the country with the Adani Group to test and deploy our tech. Ready later this year, this investment will help us build at scale - from India, for the world."

It is not entirely clear if this means Uber and Adani Group will be building a new data center from scratch, or if Uber is set to lease capacity from an existing data center. DCD has reached out to both companies for clarification.

The move is somewhat unprecedented for Uber. Previously, the ride-hailing firm housed some 95 percent of its IT in its own data centers. Among those was a Colorado facility the company bought from Microsoft in 2015, but in 2023, the company signed two seven-year deals with Google and OCI, revealing that it would be closing its own data centers.

Since then, the company has relied mainly on cloud computing capacity - including signing an agreement in April 2026 to adopt Amazon Web Services' custom Graviton and Trainium chips.

While not explicitly stated as a motivation, many countries globally are pushing for greater digital sovereignty and guarantees that data remain within country boundaries. By establishing a data center in India with an Indian corporation, Uber will be able to have greater control over its customers' data and where processing takes place.

Details about the size, capacity, and location of the data center have not been shared.

Adani Group is itself planning a massive data center buildout, having said in February it will spend some $100bn on renewable-powered AI data centers by 2035.

At the time, the company said it had around 2GW of data center capacity, and was targeting 5GW. This would include a gigawatt-scale data center campus with Google in Visakhapatnam, alongside additional campuses in Noida, and with Microsoft spanning Hyderabad and Pune.

The group also has a joint venture with EdgeConneX, AdaniConneX, which operates data centers across India. Last year, it raised $1.44 billion to fund growth plans.
