A pair of data centers with a total of 5MW is set to be built in Nepal.

Nepalese data center company Bichuten Data Vault announced yesterday that the facilities would also be the country’s “first Tier IV hyperscale data center.”

Located in Kathmandu, the country’s capital, and the city of Birgunj, around 130km (80.7 miles) south of Kathmandu, the facilities will offer an initial capacity of 240kW and expand to 5MW by 2030, according to a report by Nepalkhabar.

It has not been stated what capacity the individual data centers will have.

Bichuten also says that the facility will only use Nepalese hydroelectric power. Almost all of the country’s electricity comes from hydropower, according to the International Energy Agency.

According to Bichuten’s website, the company has a presence across Nepal, with two projects in the southern Lumbini Province, two near Kathmandu, one in Koshi Province, and another in central Gandaki Province.

It is unclear whether these are operational data centers or simply plans to build them.

Most of Nepal’s data centers are clustered around Kathmandu, according to Data Center Map. Bichuten’s competitors in the region include Ncell, AccessWorld, and Dataspace.
