Planning consent has been given to the construction of two data centers at Elevate Quarter, a proposed £900m ($1.2bn) life science campus in Stevenage, just north of London, the UK’s capital.

Elevate Quarter, as well as the two data center buildings, will be located next to a research hub operated by British pharmaceutical company GSK.

“The co-location of data centers on the campus would allow Stevenage to sit at the forefront of life science innovation in the UK,” reads the Stevenage Borough Council’s Officer’s Report.

“The centers would facilitate the research occurring at the campus by providing access to high-quality processing power. Any Stevenage company, or company from further afield… would be able to capitalize on the opportunity of this data center provision.”

Potential end-users were not identified.

Details about the data center’s electricity usage were not disclosed, but Reef Origin, one of the investors behind the project, stated that the development forms “part of a wider 110MW site located approximately 40km from Central London, within the London Public Cloud Region.”

Swiss bank UBS is another one of the development’s backers.

Reef Origin has said that a 24MVA supply is scheduled to be delivered by Q1 2027, with construction to begin later this year.

Stevenage is a town in Hertfordshire, located north of London and east of Luton.
