TSMC has activated typhoon alert preparation procedures at all its Taiwan fabs and construction sites, in the wake of Typhoon Krathon hitting the region.
However, in a statement to DCD, the company said it was not expecting the extreme weather conditions to significantly impact its operations, and described the moves it was taking as “routine.”
According to the Taiwanese Meteorological Institute, gusts of between 85-105mph could reach southern Taiwan later this week, with cumulative rainfall totals of up to 400mm expected across the region by Thursday.
This is not the first time TSMC has had to take steps to protect its critical infrastructure from extreme weather. In April 2024, the company was forced to evacuate its chip fabs and suspend construction at a number of its sites after a 7.2 magnitude earthquake hit the island.
TSMC is the world's largest contract manufacturer of semiconductors, producing chips for Nvidia, AMD, Apple, Qualcomm, and Broadcom, to name a few. Headquartered at the Hsinchu Science Park in Hsinchu, Taiwan, the company has 12 fabs on the island, all of which are located on the west coast.
