The enterprise arm of Telecom Italia (TIM) is planning to expand its data center footprint in Italy.
TIM Enterprise announced a €1 billion ($1.1bn) investment plan over the next three years.
The company said it is targeting €105 million ($122m) of investments dedicated to expanding its Edge cloud infrastructure to provide low-latency services to users.
The investment plan also includes a new 'AI-ready' facility and the upgrade of two other data centers. Once complete, the company will operate 17 data centers totaling around 125MW of capacity across Italy.
TIM and its Noovle data center unit announced plans for a 25MW data center in Rome last year. At the time, the company said it aimed to invest €130m ($135m) in the facility.
“We are developing a robust, secure, all-Italian infrastructure that can support ongoing technological transformation, and we are committed to building a truly independent and sustainable European ecosystem,” said Elio Schiavo, TIM's chief enterprise & innovative solutions officer.“Our investments in cloud, data centers, Edge computing, and cybersecurity are guided by a clear industrial vision to provide companies, institutions, and local authorities with a sovereign, scalable, and reliable platform. This is not just a technological project; it is a strategy to ensure Italy's autonomy, resilience, and competitiveness in the European and global context.”
The firm said its investments totalled €350m ($408m) in 2024.
Investors in Borsa Italiana-listed TIM, once the state-owned monopoly telecoms provider in Italy, include Poste Italiane and Vivendi. The company recently sold its Sparkle unit, which operated several subsea cables and data centers around Europe.
TIM acquired Noovle in May 2020, and relaunched the company in January 2021 after previously announcing it was to spin off its data center unit.
