Swedish telco Tele2 has announced the appointment of Jean Marc Harion as its new president and CEO.

Harion is currently the CEO of Polish telecom operator Play, and will join the carrier on November 10.

He will replace Kjell Johnsen, who announced his resignation last month. Johnsen will remain CEO until Harion starts.

Harion joined Tele2's board of directors in May. He has been CEO of Play for more than six years.

He was previously CEO of Orange Belgium and then Egypt, and was president and CEO of Altice's Dominican Republic operations.

"I am honored and very excited to be appointed new CEO and President of Tele2," said Harion.

"As a member of the board, I have had the chance to meet people and learn about the company in the past months. Tele2 is a worldwide reference for telcos and has a unique challenger culture. We will channel this energy in the right direction to build on the strong brands, continue improving customer experience, and accelerate our growth."

Earlier this year, Iliad Group agreed to pay $1.26 billion for a 19.8 percent stake in Tele2. Polish telco Play is a subsidiary of the group.

Iliad, which is owned by investor Xavier Niel, will purchase the shares from investment company Kinnevik, which is currently Tele2’s major shareholder.

Beyond Sweden, Tele2 also operates in Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. The company serves more than 20 million customers across these markets, according to figures from last year.
