Brazilian operator Tecto Data Centers has launched a new facility in Ceará, Fortaleza
The company last week inaugurated Mega Lobster, its third data center in Fortaleza (CE), considered the largest ever built by the company in the city. The official launch of the new infrastructure took place on October 23, during an event in the capital of Ceará.
The ceremony was attended by authorities and representatives of the sector, including the Minister of Communications, Frederico Siqueira Filho; José Miguel Vilela, CEO of Tecto; Alexandre Demarchi, CTO of Tecto; Tito Costa, chief revenue officer of Tecto; Dany Ramirez, COO of Tecto; as well as Alexandre Freire and Vicente Aquino, members of the National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel), and federal deputy André Figueiredo (PDT).
The company acquired the land for Mega Lobster in 2023 and broke ground in October 2024. Located in Praia do Futuro, the new data center totals 13,000 sqm (139,930 sq ft) and will offer 20MW of capacity at full build-out.
The first 4MW phase is already in operation. The site can accommodate up to 100 racks per 300 sqm room, with an average density of around 10kW per rack.
The company has invested around R$550 million (US$97m) in the project. An existing customer has reportedly been secured for the multi-tenant facility as the anchor tenant, according to BNAmericas.
In his speech at the event, Tecto CEO José Miguel Vilela addressed the accelerated growth in demand for data center infrastructure, driven by the advance of artificial intelligence technologies and the growing need to process large volumes of data.
Vilela noted that although Latin America currently accounts for around three percent of global data center capacity, Brazil has favorable conditions to consolidate itself as an international data processing center. Among the factors highlighted are the wide availability of clean energy sources, the existence of an integrated energy system, and the geopolitical position considered neutral, which contributes to the country's attractiveness for technological investments.
Tecto was launched last year after infrastructure firm V.tal spun its data centers into a new unit.
Owned by BTG Pactual Infrastructure Fund II, the current V.tal was formed after BTG merged wholesale telecom operator GlobeNet with Oi’s fiber-optic infrastructure assets unit.
In Brazil, V.tal currently has two live data centers in Fortaleza and one in Rio de Janeiro. The company is also planning a new facility in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, and has plans for a facility in São Paulo.
In Santana de Parnaíba, in the state of São Paulo, the company is developing a 200MW data center scheduled to start operating in 2027.
Internationally, the company has a site in Barranquilla, Colombia, comprising two operational data centers.
V.tal also has a number of subsea cable investments in the region and thousands of miles of terrestrial fiber.
