Brazilian fiber firm V.tal has launched a new data center subsidiary.
The company has also broken ground on a new facility in Fortaleza and acquired land in São Paulo for its first data center in the city.
“The Tecto Data Centers brand was officially launched yesterday during an event with authorities and the press to plant the cornerstone of the high-scale, high-density Mega Lobster data center in Fortaleza,” the company said over the weekend.
Pedro Henrique Fragoso, a partner at BTG Pactual, will lead Tecto as its CEO. He said: “The data center business is becoming increasingly strategic for V.tal, which has significant knowledge in investments and infrastructure projects. Considering that, we have decided to separate the unit. We have developed a robust plan for the construction of new Edge and hyperscale data centers that will place us on a new level in this market.”
The company acquired the land for Mega Lobster last year. Located in Praia do Futuro, the new data center will occupy an area of 13,000 sqm (139,930 sq ft) and will have a capacity of 20MW. The company will invest around R$ 550 million (US$97m) in the project, which will see the first phase go live in Q4 2025.
An existing customer has reportedly been secured for the multi-tenant facility as the anchor tenant, according to BNAmericas.
Tecto’s launch was paired with a $1 billion investment plan by V.tal to expand its data center footprint in Brazil. This will be funded by shareholder BTG Pactual, as well as Singapore’s GIC and Canada’s CPP Investments.
V.tal also announced it acquired land in Santana do Parnaíba, in São Paulo’s metropolitan region, to develop a new data center. Further details were not shared.
Owned by BTG Pactual Infrastructure Fund II, the current V.tal was firmed after BTG merged wholesale telecom operator GlobeNet with Oi’s fiber-optic infrastructure assets unit.
In Brazil, V.tal currently has two live data centers in Fortaleza and one in Rio de Janeiro. The company is also planning a new facility in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul. Internationally, the company has a site in Barranquilla, Colombia, comprising two operational data centers.
V.tal has a number of subsea cable investments in the region and thousands of miles of terrestrial fiber.
