The migration is being done with the help of Ateme, a video compression, delivery, and streaming solutions company. According to claims by Ateme, this will represent the first large-scale CDVR deployment in a public cloud.

Blue TV is the online platform for content from Swisscom TV, both live and on-demand. Launched in 2020, the platform offers over 330 live TV channels, at least 100 of which can stream in HD. The decision to migrate it to the cloud is hoped to "streamline" Swisscom's operations and enable greater scalability.

The deal with Ateme will see Blue TV using the company's Titan encoders, NEA packaging, and Content Delivery Network solutions.

“Subscribers watch and record more and more content,” said Marco Lötscher, head of technology group at Swisscom TV & Smart Products.

“We needed a scalable solution that would allow us to follow this growth, without being capped by on-premises investments. Ateme was the natural choice, having both helped us deploy the cutting-edge fully virtualized headend in 2018, and proved its worth through years of strong support. Now, Ateme’s cloud-native solutions are perfectly aligned with our vision, enabling us to meet our needs while delivering exceptional experiences to our viewers.”

“We are proud to collaborate with a company of the caliber of Swisscom, which placed third in Brand Finance’s ranking of the world’s most valuable and strongest brands,” said Yoann Poizeau, VP EMEA at Ateme. “It’s an honor for us to have been chosen to work with AWS to help Swisscom seamlessly migrate Blue TV’s CDVR service to the cloud, so it can continue to captivate its audience and further strengthen its brand.”

Swisscom operates seven colocation data centers across Switzerland in Basel-Grosspeter, Bern-Wankdorf, Geneva-Monbrillant, Lausanne-Savoie, Lugano-Cinque Vie, Zurich-Enge, and Zurich-Herdern.

Swisscom and AWS already had a relationship with the latter, being Swisscom's preferred public cloud provider for its enterprise IT. AWS launched its Zurich cloud region in November 2022.
