Swedish police are investigating suspected sabotage to telecommunications towers.

In total, around 30 "unexplained sabotage attacks" against telecoms infrastructure is being investigated, according to Swedish publication SVT.

The majority of these attacks have taken part along the E22 on the Swedish east coast, a road network that connects Trelleborg to Norrköping.

Suspected sabotage attacks started during the Easter weekend, and in some cases led to outages on mobile networks, though nothing major.

SVT reports that the attacks haven't been around theft, but instead have seen vandals cut cables and destroy fuses.

In some instances, technical equipment has been broken, notes Roger Gustafsson, head of security at the Swedish Post and Telecom Agency, PTS.

Police are working on the theory that the same person is behind most of the attacks, notably because almost all of the sabotage has happened in connection with the European highway E22 along the east coast.

The investigation is led by the Serious Crimes Unit in Kalmar, which has the authority to coordinate cases in Småland and Östergötland.

Highlighting the increased attacks against telecoms infrastructure in Sweden, state-owned infrastructure provider Teracom told SVT that it has reported 50 incidents to the police for the first four months of this year. During the same period last year, the figure was only 15.

The incidents include suspected sabotage and attempted intrusions.
