An immersion-cooled pod has been deployed outside Milan, Italy.

MGH Systems recently announced the launch of Italy's first immersion cooling deployment. The move is part of the company’s move into offering data center solutions.

The company is working with lubricant firm Castrol, immersion cooling firm Submer, electronics firm Compal, and Italian broadcast company Dacta, with commissioning expected in the first week of June 2025.

MGH said the proof of concept deployment brings together Castrol's thermal management fluids, Submer's immersion cooling systems, and Compal's server platform.

“This synergy aims to deliver a robust and scalable solution,” the company said. “As the first implementation of its kind in Italy, this POC positions the country at the forefront of sustainable data center innovation. It serves as a model for future deployments, highlighting the potential of immersion cooling to revolutionize the industry.”

Though further details of the deployment weren’t shared in the announcement, BP Castrol’s Stephen Zhao said on LinkedIn that the project is based in Vimercate, a town just outside Milan.

“The proof-of-concept project...marks a significant step forward in efficient data center operations and the growth of liquid cooling in Italy,” he said. “It also aims to showcase how the data center industry can future-proof itself and keep up with increased computing demand.”

Submer South EMEA sales director, Franco Caroli, added in his own post: “We integrated the Submer pod into an existing environment using in-row cooling. By connecting the pod to the same water infrastructure already in place, we avoided major changes while enabling Dacta to massively increase their power density in a very efficient and scalable way.”

Dacta Broadcast was founded at the turn of the year by MB Holding, and acquired radio transmitter maker Elenos, also taking over radio/broadcast equipment maker Itelco and modulation solutions provider ProTelevision Technologies. Itelco, founded in 1962, was acquired by Elenos in 2015.

MGH and MB Holdings were both founded by Marco Brivio. MGH’s website notes a placeholder link for what seems to be a Dacta-branded data center unit. Posts on LinkedIn suggests the company is aiming to also offer containerized Edge modules and micro data center pods.
