Stream Data Centers has canceled plans to develop a data center in Marion County, South Carolina.

The company said that it would no longer continue with the project "because utility power cannot be sourced on this site within the required timeframe." Timing specifics were not shared.

Project Liberty was initially pitched as an $800 million project with three buildings, each 655,770 sq ft (61,000 sqm), for a total of 1,967,310 sq ft (182,800 sqm).

Proposals for the data center showed expansion possibilities for at least three more buildings.

The data center was approved by Marion County Council in January, alongside tax breaks. Locals claimed that it was hastily approved during a winter storm and not initially labeled as a data center.

Residents packed February meetings about the project, with some protesting the data center. While water concerns were among those raised by locals, MarCo Rural Water Co. Inc. said that demand for the first center would be a “very small” 7,500 gallons a day.

"Though this project will not move forward, Stream is pleased to share that the funds committed to Marion County will still be distributed to a range of local organizations, supporting after-school programs, library resources, and other efforts that benefit local families and institutions," Stream said.

In March, an up to $3 billion data center in nearby Spartanburg County was dropped after local officials denied tax abatements for the project.

South Carolina legislators are currently debating two bills that could increase regulatory oversight of data centers.
