Pan-African cloud service provider ST Digital has begun construction on a data center at the VITIB technology park in Grand-Bassam, Cote d’Ivoire (also known as the Ivory Coast).

The data center, built to Tier III standards, will span 4,000 sqm (43,055 sq ft) and offer various services, including modular colocation spaces, a landing station for submarine cables, and artificial intelligence-designed infrastructure.

The data center will reach operational status by the end of Q1 2025.

"Our data center will be a high-security, state-of-the-art, eco-friendly infrastructure with a reduced carbon footprint. We’ve even planned innovative initiatives such as creating artificial lakes and vegetable gardens using outputs from the air-conditioning systems," said Steve Tchouaga, CEO of ST Digital.

In May, ST Digital announced a significant expansion within the West African market with three new data centers.

The first two data centers, in Gabon and Cote d’Ivoire, are expected to be operational this year. The third, located in Togo, will be completed in 2025.

The projects follow a €10 million ($10.86m) investment from UHURU Investment Partners into ST Digital.

The Cameroon-based company provides cloud services in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Republic of Congo, Cameroon, Togo, Gabon, and Cote d’Ivoire.

Several other data center firms have invested in the region. Equinix-owned MainOne launched a data center in Cote d’Ivoire at the end of last year, while Raxio launched a facility this September.
