Sabey Data Centers has backed out of a proposal to build a data center in Butte, Montana.

Sabey had an agreement to buy a 600-acre land parcel in the Montana Connections business park, located at the intersection of German Gulch Road and Rick Jones Way.

But part of the parcel was acquired by REC Silicon, a silicon materials producer, in April.

REC Silicon had a right-to-first refusal agreement over the land, which gives it the first opportunity to make an offer for and buy a given property.

But J.P. Gallagher, the chief executive of Butte-Silver Bow County, told the Montana State Exponent that Sabey was “still looking in southwest Montana, including Silver Bow.

“They’re looking in Deer Lodge County and other places in southwest Montana.”

Sabey intended to source power from Montana utility NorthWestern Energy late last year for 50MW of power in 2027, with the option to expand to 250MW or more by 2029.

A joint venture between Sabey Corporation and National Real Estate Advisors, Sabey Data Centers operates data centers across the US, with sites in operation or development in Quincy, Seattle, and East Wenatchee, Washington; New York City; Austin, Texas; Umatilla, Oregon; and Ashburn, Virginia.
