A proposal to turn a warehouse into a data center has been approved by the local authorities of Allen Township, located north of Allentown, Pennsylvania.

The Allen Township Board of Supervisors yesterday voted unanimously to allow real estate investment trust Prologis to turn part of Prologis Lehigh Valley East 16, a 1 million sq ft (93,000 sqm) warehouse and logistics facility, into a data center.

Located at 2500 Liberty Drive, details about the future data center are sparse.

It will use a closed-loop cooling system, and part of the facility’s energy needs will be met by solar energy, according to reporting by WFMZ.

But the campus’ total capacity was not disclosed.

Prologis is one of many logistics and industrial real estate companies that have since moved into the data center business.

The company says it has some 5.2GW of power committed by utilities or in advanced stages of negotiations, and it is targeting up to 10GW of capacity over the next 10 years. Prologis has current and planned developments in Ohio, Illinois, Virginia, Georgia, California, Indiana, and Texas in the US, as well as Paris, France.
