US data center firm Prometheus Hyperscale has secured planning approval for its long-planned campus in Wyoming.

The company last week announced it had received unanimous conditional use permit approval from the Uinta County board of commissioners for its flagship data center campus near Evanston.

The company said the 506-acre site will initially offer 1.25GW, with potential to expand to 5GW.

Construction is anticipated to begin within six months of final permitting, with the full 1.25GW campus expected to be built out in phases over 48 to 60 months.

"This unanimous approval reflects the strength of the project's fundamentals and the depth of community engagement we've built in Uinta County," said Trevor Neilson, president of Prometheus Hyperscale.

Launched around 2020 and formally known as Wyoming Hyperscale Whitebox, Prometheus was relaunched in September 2024. The Wyoming-based company initially planned to develop a 120MW campus on the site back in 2020.

Unita County’s planning and zoning commission recommended approval for the project last month during a heavily attended meeting.

Prometheus said the Evanston campus will operate as a fully islanded microgrid, generating power on-site through natural gas engines and turbines. Not connecting to the public utility grid will eliminate “interconnection queue exposure and ratepayer impact as regulatory risk factors,” according to the firm.

The company has another project in development in Wyoming – the 1.25GW Falls Ranch near Casper, in partnership with Casper Carbon Capture. It is also developing a site in Dallas, Texas, in partnership with Engie.

The company has previously said it was targeting campuses in Pueblo and Fort Morgan, Colorado, and Phoenix and Tucson, Arizona, though the status of these projects is unclear.

In-Q-Tel (IQT), a venture firm funded by the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), has invested in Prometheus.
