Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) has launched a new OCI Dedicated Region in Oman.

The second in the country, the new region is located in Ibri City.

The launch was announced on September 29 by Nick Redshaw, SVP of Oracle Technology Cloud MEA, via a LinkedIn post.

Dedicated Regions are Oracle's on-premises offering, wherein Oracle hardware is deployed in a customer's data center.

Redshaw wrote: "I am delighted to announce that the second OCI Dedicated Region in Oman is now live in Ibri City. This marks the completion of Oman’s first hyperscale cloud region designed to help boost public sector innovation and help ensure data sovereignty.

"The new OCI Dedicated Region offers 200+ OCI AI and cloud services, as well as Oracle Fusion Cloud Applications, to Oman government entities. The Oman government will now be able to move its business-critical workloads to the cloud, enabling operational efficiency and cost savings while ensuring compliance with the Sultanate’s data sovereignty requirements."

The Ibri City region is hosted by ITHCA Group, which will also have access to the OCI region's offerings.

Oracle has an existing region in Oman, also hosted by ITHCA Group, located in Muscat.

ITHCA Group was established in 2019, and was formerly known as Oman Information and Communication Technologies Group. The company integrated Oman Broadband, Oman Technology Fund, Oman Towers and Space Communication Technologies under its umbrella shortly after its founding.

In 2020, ITHCA Group signed a deal with Oracle to develop a complete cloud service in Oman. According to an interview with Business Focus earlier this year, ITHCA is also working on projects with Google, Amazon, and Microsoft, and notes that US investments are tied to many of its data center and submarine cable operations.

In the nearby United Arab Emirates, Oracle is developing a sovereign cloud with telecoms company Du.

Oracle has two UAE cloud regions: UAE East located in Dubai, which launched in September 2020, and UAE Central in Abu Dhabi, which launched in November 2021. The company also has cloud regions in nearby Saudi Arabia, where plans for a third were announced in February 2023.
