APAC operator Open DC has launched a new data center in Penang, Malaysia.

The company says the 30MW facility, PE2, which is located at Bayan Lepas Technology Park, is now the largest data center on the island of Penang.

It has been operating since April, and Open DC said the data center “is designed to meet growing demands for ultra-low latency connectivity and high-performance computing.”

Yab Tuan Chow Kon Yeow, chief minister of Penang, said: “The establishment of PE2 marks a pivotal step in Penang’s journey toward becoming a digitally advanced, low-carbon economy. As a strategic infrastructure anchor, PE2 will accelerate high-value investments, spark innovation, and enhance Penang’s global competitiveness in next-generation technologies.”

PE2 integrates DE-CIX, Malaysia’s Penang Internet Exchange transport node, something that Open DC says enables fast, local internet traffic exchange. This reduces latency, enhances connectivity for telecom providers and supports industries like finance and manufacturing.

Open DC describes the 10-acre campus as “eco-friendly,” and says it incorporates clean energy agreements and solar power, though details of these have not been disclosed.

The PE2 project was first announced in 2022, and the data center has been developed in partnership with the Malaysian government.

Malaysia has become one of the premier data center markets in the APAC region. The biggest markets are in Kuala Lumpur, Cyberjaya, and Johor Bahru. Operators in the country include PDG, AirTrunk, Equinix, Keppel, ChinData's Bridge DC, STT GDC, and Yondr.
