Electrical equipment manufacturer ON.energy has completed construction of its AI UPS at the National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR) in Boulder, Colorado.

ON.energy claims that the UPS is the first medium voltage unit engineered specifically for the AI data center market.

In collaboration with NLR, ON will test the technology at NLR’s Flatirons Campus, which is home to an advanced grid simulator and the Advanced Research on Integrated Energy Systems (ARIES) research platform.

“Our deployment at NRL’s Flatirons lets us provide extensive performance validation of our AI UPS meeting each customer’s unique requirements in a controlled environment,” said Dax Kepshire, president of ON.energy’s data center division.

Under the terms of the agreement, NLR will simulate both the power profile of an AI data center, including fast-moving GPU workload spikes, and a full range of grid and off-grid operating conditions. According to the partners, the testing will validate how ON.energy’s AI UPS stabilizes these loads, protects the data center, and supports the electric grid during disturbance events.

“NLR is committed to advancing technologies that improve the flexibility and reliability of the nation’s power systems and at the speed this sector demands,” said Andrew Hudgins, ARIES Laboratory program manager. “With ON.energy the teams have gone from first contact through contracting and construction in less than six months here at Flatirons Campus.”

In addition, the installation will provide a controlled platform for customers to run their own validation scenarios, a capability already attracting interest from a number of hyperscalers.

ON launched its medium voltage UPS in October of last year. According to the company, thesystem is designed to scale from megawatt to gigawatt levels in both grid-connected and off-grid environments. It can absorb transient loads and fluctuations from GPU clusters, helping stabilize the grid and protect on-site generation.

Following this, in December, the company signed a 5GW transformer supply agreement for data center and renewable infrastructure applications in the US.

Founded in 2016, ON.energy is based in Miami, Florida. In addition to the development of UPS systems, the company also develops utility-scale energy storage systems, with more than 400MWh currently under construction.

ON.energy is not the only company to launch a UPS focused on the AI data center market. In October, Solidion Technology announced its Peak Series UPS, which the company said it expressly aimed at AI data center developers.
